Some hiking paths are undeservedly ignored as being too minimal to be convenient. The trail to the monastery in Lava used to belong to this category. People considered it a minor detour and not an actual destination. Judging by the map, this trail is a usual short walk to the modest monastery that doesn’t need much effort getting there.
However, sometimes it is those places that offer the best experience, requiring little effort but making a huge impact in the end. Looking back, using this seemingly unremarkable trail allowed me to enjoy Lava in a more tranquil and original way than any of its well-known viewpoints.

Lava is not particularly popular as a place to visit, since most people see it only as a short stopover before reaching Rishop or Zuluk. Therefore, most tourists rush through Lava, focusing on bigger attractions on the way. Consequently, the monastery trail is often overlooked, since it does not attract tourists’ attention as more famous spots do.
Locals rarely pushed the idea either, treating the trail as something ordinary rather than remarkable. That casual attitude nearly led me to skip it entirely in favour of a longer nap before the next leg of the journey. However, a last-minute decision changed my plan completely.
The walk up to Lava’s monastery
The trail began just behind the main market area in Lava, easy to miss without local guidance. A narrow path wound upward through dense pine forest, quiet except for birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves. Wooden signposts, faded from years of rain, marked the way in simple, unassuming style.

Within minutes, the noise from the village faded completely. Mist often settles low across the trail, especially in the early morning, adding a slightly mysterious feel to an otherwise simple walk. The climb stayed gentle, manageable even for travellers like me without much hiking experience.

As I approached the monastery, I noticed its bright roof peeking through trees until the main building appeared. Prayer flags hung across the courtyard and fluttered in the mountain breezes. The building was not grand, but it had a dignified presence that some majestic monasteries often lack when crowded with tourists.
Monks walked calmly in the courtyard without making a fuss about the visitors coming there from time to time. This added to the place’s genuineness, making it authentic and appealing, unlike other commercial touristy sites. Sitting quietly in the courtyard and listening to the chants from a distance gave me an amazing sense of peace and harmony.
Views in Lava that justify the climb
Leaving the monastery, the trail opened into spectacular vistas across the landscape. If the sky is clear, one can see mountain ranges that are thousands of miles away, painted in shades of green and grey. Below the path’s elevation, the Neora Valley National Park appeared with its abundant vegetation.
Low clouds drifted across the valley at the same height, making the view even more spectacular. The trail is not interrupted by many benches, so most visitors just stop for a moment and go back. This simplicity added extra charm to the trail.
What almost got missed in Lava?
If I had missed this trail, I would have lost one of the most beautiful parts of the trip. The monastery is small but gives a feeling of calmness that larger tourist spots cannot provide. The walk was very brief, but the experience was overwhelming.

Staying nearby also allowed for an early morning visit, ideal for catching the mist before it clears.
A central stay reduces travel time, leaving more room to explore other quieter corners of Lava without rushing. For a trail this easy to overlook, proximity makes a real difference.
A trail worth remembering in Lava
The monastery trail in Lava exceeded all expectations and was worthy far more than its unassuming reputation would lead one to believe. The pleasant walk through the pine forest, the humble monastery, and the wide valley views contributed to the realisation that this trail allows experiencing Lava at its most genuine.
Any attempt to skip this walk would have deprived me of an enjoyable experience, one of those moments that cannot be regarded as magnificent only by virtue of distance. What mattered more is that sometimes a little walk without expectations can reveal much more than chasing sights for a day.
